I believe this is something that is determined by the person who is
"sending" the picture. If they "insert" the picture, it will appear in the
message of your mail. If the "attach" it will be something you need to open
separately.
If you receive a lot of pictures from someone in particular, you may suggest
they insert instead of attaching YOUR pictures.

how can i get t-bird mail to open attachments ie pictures in the message
box instead of what i have to do which is either send them to my desktop
or open them in a photo program? it makes for a lot of extra steps
because i have to go somewhere to view them and then back to the email
to reply if necessary.
