This works fine on my system. There is the occasional (renegade) program
that insists that temp be in the windows folder. For this reason, don't
delete the temp folder from \windows.
To move the folder, place these lines in the file c:\autoexec.bat, (if you
are booting from drive c:)
set temp=D:\temp
set tmp=%temp%
substituting for D the existing local drive letter you plan to use. Don't
use a network or detachable / removable drive. Make sure the temp folder
exists on this drive, and reboot.
If you check c:\windows\temp on a regular basis, it will be empty 99% of the
time.
After windows starts using the new temp folder, delete the contents of the
old c:\windows\temp.

The second line shows a nice feature, the set command will assign any alias
(otherwise known as DOS environment variables) the same value of a previous
alias, if you enclose the previous alias (in this case, temp) within percent
signs.

I used to put lines in autoexec.bat to clean up the temp folder, but I find
it more useful to make a shortcut to temp and place it on my desktop. I
clean it out a couple times a week. If you are interested, to use the
autoexec.bat to clean up the temp folder, put the following line at the
bottom of autoexec.bat
del %temp%\*.tmp
or, to erase everything, open notepad, put a single y on the first line,
press enter twice to put in a blank line, and save as c:\yes.txt
then in autoexec.bat insert at the bottom
del %temp%\*.* <c:\yes.txt

This will prevent the boot from stopping, because normally, deleting a
folder's contents forces dos to ask if you are sure you want to delete
everything. It will see the y inside yes.txt as if you typed it on your
keyboard. Clumsy, but effective.

I'm running Windows 98 SE. I'm thinking of moving the Windows
default temporary files folder, now C:\Windows\temp, to a different
logical drive, to make housekeeping easier.
Is there any reason I shouldn't do this?
How do I change it?
