Could this code be recorded

They are most often stored in the registry, but I have seen them
stored in .ini files and in similar configuration files of almost any
description.  It might not even be stored anywhere.  The setup file
might just be hardwired to recognize numbers with certain
properties.
Do you remember anything about the number's format?  Would you
recognize it if you saw it again?  If the answer to either of these is
'yes', the first thing to do is to use regedit or your favorite registry
editor to search for the values of any keys containing the name of
the program or the vendor.
