I would guess that perhaps your "home page" has been set (perhaps
maliciously?) to a page that closes your browser.

I believe that on XP Home's Control Panel, the "Internet Options" icon
actually lets you set the properties for Internet Explorer, which should
include the URL of the page you want to start up with. If it's not a URL
you recognize, try changing it to something safe like http://www.google.com .
