Can it be effectively used for general "surfing" and
browser-mail?

Yes, I have done all that, more than once. It has been set
to block Banner/Skyscraper, Pop-up/Pop-under, and Animation
ads for a long time. It works on perhaps 15% of the ads.
Worked much better with ZA 3.5.
