Hi John,
During a painful 3-week period after the motherboard on my old computer
died, I ran Windows 95 on a borrowed 486 SX 33 with 4 Megs of RAM. No
math co-processor, of course. A bit slow, but surprisingly functional.
Windows 98, from what I've read here and elsewhere, would be a
different matter. The Microsoft Official minimum recommendations
include a 486 DX 66, but most commentators suggest a Pentium.
