It definitely sounds like you have a hardware problem, probably bad memory. If
you can, try swapping for known good memory. If that doesn't do it, try removing
everything except the bare essentials, leaving just video, memory, disk and CPU.
The fact that you have the same problem with different OS's points to something
in the hardware.
