  Is this still true after you save the file and exit and restart
Word?  I don't think so.

  The fact that these *operations* are rememebered in the "undo
buffer" in no way implies that they are necessarily embedded in the
document.  If you can see and remove them when using "reveal codes"
in WordPerfect, I'd venture that WordPerfect has implemented "undo"
in a very odd manner (which Word is under no obligation to imitate).

previous versions of document pages, and I wouldn't mind if someone
would suggest a simple trick for forcing it to ditch space no longer
used.  But that space is not embedded in the text -- this request is
completely orthogonal to the "reveal codes" issue.]
