There are a lot of programs that can do this. I'm sure that several
people will tell you about their personal favorites, but if you just want
a quick approximation, then here is a fast and easy way to find out the
speed.
Go to a software download site, like www.shareware.com and download a
large file (something over 5 meg should be good enough) start the
download and then wait 3-4 minutes for everything to "level out". Now
take the speed rating displayed in the status dialog and multiply that by
10. You can quit the download at any point after this. Since the
download does not complete, there will be no file left over to be deleted.
