<< Quick question. I have a Win98se with some files I want to save on a new
WinXP box. I disconnected old HD and connected to WinXP box to transfer
4gigs of files. It won't copy over. Is this because of the different file
systems? How can I get those files onto the WinXP NTFS system?

Problem Solved but interesting result. I had a folder containing roughly 4
gigs of mp3's I was trying to transfer from a Win98 30 gig HD to my new WinXP
box w/ 40 gig HD. I tried attaching old HD as slave to new NTFS HD, as
master on 2nd IDE cable, as slave on 2nd IDE cable. BIOS would recognize
drive and I could see its contents. But when I did a "select all" on folder
contents or even selected just the folder itself, the XP box would stall and
not copy a thing. I installed NIC into old Win98 machine and did the
crossover cable connection to XP box. Did the XP networking wizard etc and
could see contents of Win98 HD. Selected the files en mass and initiated the
copy. This was the only time the XP box showed the little window of the
copying process. The copy process would stall on the first file. Turns out
that file was corrupt, which halted copying process. Selected other files
and they copied over just fine. Out of the several hundred mp3 files I had
to copy, about 10 were corrupt and stopped the copy process. Each time, the
progress window would list file name and stall. Since I had files in
alphabetical order, I could restart copying on the next set of files and skip
the corrupt file.

So in the unlikely event anyone else runs into similar problems copying files
over to new HD, this is one possible solution. The input and suggestions
from this list was greatly appreciated and covered just about every other
potential problem. Thanks for the help!
