Hello Karen,

Probably the first thing  I would suggest is to close everything in Task
Manager EXCEPT
Systray
and
Explorer

Now try it.  I know this sounds like a pain but it will eliminate the
background tasks that may be interrupting your defrag.

OR,

If that doesn't work, or you just prefer,

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode and try to defrag your C drive there.

Others on the list will also come up with ideas for you.
