Dear People,

I have a small database with an Employee table, one of the fields of
which is an EmpID. I made this an Integer data type instead of an
Auto Number because I wanted to be able to recapture the numbers of
people who quit etc.

When the New Employee form opens I would like that field to default to
the next consecutive number. (Any missing ones will be reused on a case
by case basis.) If there were existing EmpID's of say:
001, 004, 005, 006, and 007 I would like the default to be 008.

Since it's just a field of integers, I was looking at the Max function.
As in:

(Max(EmpID))+1

That syntax doesn't sit well with my machine, at least every place that
I've tried to put it so far.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Sincerely,
John Haase
