Mick Fitzpatrick asked "I normally type in the date like 02 SEP 03,
then Excel displays it as 02-Sep-03 ... if it could display the relevant
day as well this would be a real bonus for me.

Have a look at Format/Cells/Custom (the bottom of the Category
list). You can build up your own date format by choosing one of the
formats offered then changing it to suit your self.
The trick for days, months and years is that a single "d, m or y" gives
a number without a leading zero.
"dd" gives leading zeros.
"ddd" gives an abbreviated day of the week, month or year
"dddd" gives the full day of the week, month or year.

You can put in or leave out - or / as you prefer
