I use Zone Alarm (free ver) and I'm  more than pleased with it's performance.  I've used ZA for the past 6 years and have never had a bit of trouble. Stops all INTERNET traffic when my computer is idle; Keeps track of any and all information going out or coming in.  ZA allows me to know whom or what is trying to gain access to my data.
