In my experience, IE 4 was the beginning of the downfall of the IE product.
Each successive version after 4.0 has been more buggy than the previous.
As you may recall, IE 4 was the point at which MS began TRYING to
integrate the IE browser into Windows. Then the courts made them take it
back out. The end result was that MS tried to interweave a MARGINAL
piece of software (IE 4) into a even LESS STABLE operating system (Windows)
and then suddenly had to rip it back out, making both pieces even MORE
unstable than they were to begin with.
So my advice is..... don't fix it if it ain't broke.
