James...

With Windows XP being so different than Win98 in the "inner workings" it is
best to buckle-up and do a fresh install. At best, you will run into driver
conflicts... at worst... well, you've already seen the worst.

First off... did you run the compatibility wizard that comes on the Windows
XP disk? Being a Windows 98 box, I'm sure there are going to be several
programs that will not run under XP, not to mention 1 or more hardware
devices. Does the box meet WinXP minimum requirements? Have any Legacy
hardware? You didn't mention the specs of the machine so I'm out on a limb
here.

In my opinion, one of the worst mistakes you can make is to try and upgrade
from ANY previous version of Windows. How long has the current version of
Windows been installed? Any weird errors in the current install? These will
be brought over into the new install, and most likely complicate
everything. My advice would be to make backups of your important data,
format and do a clean install, then install fresh the programs you want to
run under XP.
