Thanks for the input Phillipe but I'm pretty sure that it's not a virus.

Using a little detective work and fiddling with the time stamp, I've concluded
that it
happened at about 3 AM on the first of the month...... exactly when I have
scandisk
scheduled to run in thorough mode.
