Windows Xp Service Pack 1 Athlon 1.4g 512 mb memory

On boot up the resolution goes large and the image no longer fits the
screen.

When the image size is changed to the normal size it stays that way till the
next boot.  Normal size is 800x600.  Next time it will finish booting in
that
size then it blinks and it all appears again this time in the overexpanded
screen filling size 640x480.  Each time thereafter it will repeat the same
way correct size till after boot completed then a blink to the other size.
When you check the size it says 640x480 rather than the 800x600  that you
had chosen a boot or two back.

Video card    MGIFC  G+ ProA/8BN/5  SN3460

The computer was scanned defragged and checked for viruses last evening.

Suggestions please on how to get the image to stay the normal smaller size.
