Regardless of your connection type (dialup, cable, DSL, etc.), it's my opinion that it's imperative to have a
firewall. Learning to configure a firewall so it doesn't interfere too much can be tricky, but it's a lot easier
than undoing a hacker's damage. I would recommend paying for Zone Alarm Pro, but they do have a free version here:
www.zonelabs.com

I believe WinXP has a built-in firewall, so if that's what you're running, you may not need another...I don't know.
