The connection speed is the connection speed at the moment of connection. This
connection speed may over time lower due to many factors but that will not
change the task bar readout. Some modems will increase speed if the factors
change but many do not. (So see my previous post about throughput)

But to be more spefic with your question. The task bar icon may sure one of two
types of speed. If it says xxxxxxK then it is referring to modem speeds, e.g.
14.4, 28.8, 33.4, etc. It may also show bps which is bits per second (a form of
throughput?) (see CONTROL PANEL/MODEMS/PROPERTIES/GENERAL tab/ MAXIMUM SPEED).
I have connected a 33.6 at 115,200 bps. I suspect this is what you are seeing.
Could be wrong. Been so before...(once I thought I was wrong <VBG>)

If you inf file does not have a setting for the particular bps setting, the
task bar will indicate bps rather than modem speed.

Does anyone know of program that checks the 'true' connection speed to the
internet? The task bar one says 57.8 and as I only have a 56 modem I somehow
doubt it is accurrate!!
