Thank you for your suggestions. They may seem trivial, but sometimes we
forget to do some of the obvious. The Event Log showed nothing
pertaining to DownloadMage. I went to the support website and found a
newer version. Downloaded it and re-installed. Since then, knock on
wood, I have not had any more problems. I do fees a bit edgy though!

Have you checked XP Event Viewer?

I found it helpful with problems I had
