Thank you for your suggestions. They may seem trivial, but sometimes we
forget to do some of the obvious. The Event Log showed nothing
pertaining to DownloadMage. I went to the support website and found a
newer version. Downloaded it and re-installed. Since then, knock on
wood, I have not had any more problems. I do fees a bit edgy though!

have you tried re-installing the program? If you did an upgrade install
of XP, you may have to reinstall some programs.    Pat Langston

Have you checked XP Event Viewer?
Being somewhat new to XP myself,
I found it helpful with problems I had
