No, it is not mandatory. I'm in a dozen groups, and do not have a
Yahoo email address.
To join groups via the web, you need to have a Yahoo *profile*, on
which you specify one or more email addresses, and before you can use
these addresses to join, they need to be "verified" -- a process
where Yahoo sends the address a password that you must retrieve and
enter via the web. It's awkward, but not actually hard.
In general, though, you can subscribe by sending an email to
[log in to unmask]
Depending on how the group's owner has set it up, this will either
add your email address to the group, or send the group owner a
message requesting permission to add your address to the group. (In
this case, though, you'll want to link that group membership to a
profile if the group has an active "Files" area or the like....)
