Diane,
I just tried exactly what you described and it works okay on my machine.
1. Have you installed any of the service releases for Office?
Click HELP -- ABOUT WORD and look for an SR number after the version.
2. Have you run scandisk lately?
3. Have you tried to reinstalling Word? Insert the Office/Word CD,
run the setup, and select the REINSTALL button
4. You may need to completely uninstall Word/Office AND delete
all the program folders, then install it all over again.
