OK, I fixed the problem with my computer hanging up at startup by blowing
away McAfee VirusScan.
Then, I located the problem with the computer hanging up at shut down by
going into msconfig and changing display properties to VGA 640 X 480 X 16 per
Microsoft at:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/windows/tshoot/startup98/causes/DisplayDr
iver2.asp
(I hate to say it, Uncle Bill did something right here. His site walked me
right through it, and this was their first suggestion to resolve the problem,
which would indicate that this is a common problem.) My computer now shuts
down quickly and without incident.
But, before I give Uncle Bill too much credit, after helping me diagnose the
problem as a driver that is not working or not compatible with Windows 98, he
neglected to tell me how to reset my display properties. I went to
Start/Settings/Control Panel/Display/Settings, took it to 1024 X 768, said
OK, and restarted computer, but I'm still at 640 X 480. What am I doing
wrong? I have a two year old HP Pavilion 8380 running Windows 98, with a 19"
GEM monitor which has worked flawlessly up to now. FWIW, on occasion, my
computer has chosen to crash on me by making the screen go black, so maybe
this display driver problem has been an issue for a while.
I'm running out of time. As previously noted, I have to get my computer into
CompUSA for free installation of new memory, CD-RW, Hard drive and scanner.
I wanted to get my computer to full health before I take it in so if there's
a problem after installation, I can reasonably expect them to resolve it.
Thanks for all your help already, and IA for helping me get this last bugaboo
taken care of.
