I think the main problem with Nuts & Bolts is that the original company,
Helix Software was bought by Cybermedia who was bought by McAfee who was
bought by Network Associates.
It may not have happened in that exact order, but the end result is that
too many "corporate fingers" have been "poking around in the pie" and have
made a big mess of a once great product.
It's unfortunate but it seems to happen all to often. Big company A has a
mediocre product and that can't compete with smaller company B's superior
product, or maybe they don't have anything but just want to get into the
market, so they buyout company B. A does not understand the inner
workings and complexities of product B and they end up "kludging" together
an even less functional product which eventually dies a slow painful
death.
I think that Symantec was the pioneer of this self-destructive paradigm
and - so far - is still the king, but they are facing a serious threat
from NWA (in my opinion).
