Considering the fact that you are using win98, i will presume this is a
fairly  new pc.Is it still under warrenty? It almost sounds like what
happened to me. the Real Time Clock *rtc* may be bad. my local computer
dealer had to swap out the motherboard for free(under warrenty) to correct a
similar situation
