Mary's question prompts me to ask another:

1. How do I delete certain selected Restore points?  I guess there must be
something buried deep in Admin tools in which you can view the set of
Restore Points, but I can't find it. Nothing in Control
Panel/System/Restore that I can see.

I found the button in "disk cleanup" which enables the removal of all but
the last restore point---a disaster waiting to happen, as Mary has found out!

2. I'd also like to know just what "Restore" actually restores. The
registry, obviously. And, presumably, all system files and program
settings? I assume that setting the slider to a lesser disk space tells
"Restore" to preserve progressively less and less stuff.  How does it
decide what to preserve? If I were to make the setting for disk space a
bare minimum, (let's say 1%) what is going to be left out? Is choosing the
right setting Art or Science?

I have disabled System Restore on the partitions containing only data files
such as photos, correspondence, etc.  Is this the right thing to do?
