I like to use analogies:
The internet is like a freeway. It carries the information.
The ISP is a bit like the onramp to the freeway. It allows you to
access the internet.
IE (and other browsers) are like your car. They allow you to use the
information on the internet.
Outlook Express (and other email programs) are like a CB Radio (or
cell phone, you get the idea ;) ) They let you communicate with
other people.
