Because You don't use 0 before number. Without 0
DOS character map is used, real inserted code is 0162
or something else depending from computer settings.
There is another way to type symbols -any Unicode symbol
what is supported in font in MS Word. Type Unicode number
and press Alt+x. For ¢ it is a2 and then Alt+x
