If you have a high speed connection or access to one
and a burner, there are a multitude of choices.

I personally like Slackware and RedHat. I run those
and FreeBSD on my machines.

Downloading them will take a long time, especially
with the applications and other support programs and
files.

You're much better off buying a CD Set it's worth the
money and a number of the binaries come precomplied.

If you know CPP and aren't afraid of makefiles you
could download them though.

If you want to get a small distribution I suppose
something like minix would be good. Actually I'm not
sure if it's still supported but you could probably
find it somewhere.

If you want to run it on Windows, Phatlinux is a good
start, not wonderful but a good place to get a feel
without killing your current file system.

Check through the various Linux sites I have some
links on my site:
http://www.geocities.com/anpconsult/info.html

If you're totally new to the linux world get yourself
a couple of good books, UNIX for Dummies is very good,
UNIX System Administration Handbook and Programming in
Perl (O'Reilly) are all good supplementary sources of
information that will be useful.

If you want to describe what your purpose for getting
Linux is, it would be quite helpful.
