I had a similar problem that was recently resolved by reinstalling the video
card drivers.  Hope this helps.

I was called to fix a problem a 9-yr. old visitor created.  Windows 95 is
running on a Pentium-S 100 MHz machine.  Magic SchoolBus requires 256 colors
but the machine will not keep a 256 color setting.  On restart, it reverts
to 16 color...every time.  What is wrong?  When I boot, this message
appears.  There is a problem with your display settings.  The adapter type
is incorrect or the current settings do not work with your box.
