Thanks, Bill.  That did it!

I had TweakUI installed on my system.  In fact, the problem
began when I installed PowerToys.  Up to that time, I had
not had a problem with the recurring user id/password
screen.

One thing:  when you hit <enter> in the password block,
TweakUI closes immediately.  It doesn't give you a chance to
click "Apply".  That doesn't stop it form working, however.

As a home user, the idea of correcting the problem on the
"Network" portion of Tweakui was not intuitive to me.
Unfortunately, it seems that a lot of things about Win95 are
not very intuitive.
