Thanks to all who responded to my query where to find vpctcom.vxd, which
Windows SFC indicated was corrupt.

Replacing file caused my machine to instantly crash. This file was for
modem formerly in computer, and caused problem, even though modem now in
computer is same make and model. Removing file did not solve problem of
inoperable computer.

Removing and reinstalling modem driver brought computer back to
operation.
