Ian, maybe I'm missing the point with this, but what you described is what I
do all the time with my OE, which came with my win98SE.  Maybe I don't know
of an application or use that you have in mind that would make this not
useful, but I just can't think what that would be.  I can choose my font,
underline, save something I create anywhere I like or send it.... I use it
for all sorts of things.  (I get confused by wordpad too, and find notepad
too crude just like you do.)
