Mary,

The icons in the task bar represent programs that are running.  To remove
them from the task bar you need to close them. Usually you can right click
and get a menu that has "close" in it.  If your version of windows doesn't
do that, then left click and open the program and close it the regular
way.  (As programs close the task bar empties.)
