Lew,

Yes, Outlook (all versions) can use an alias, but
it must be set up in the address book first.

OE (which I use) calls the alias a "nickname"
I'm not sure of the name that Outlook uses, but
it is one of the "fill in the blanks" when you create
a new contact.
