Yesterday, I tried to help a friend who had gotten into trouble while
trying to install Norton System Works 2002 Standard Edition on his
computer. The computer is a pentium computer running at 250 MHz with a
10 gig hard drive about half empty. The operating system is Windows 98.

When he called me, he had tried to install System Works on his computer
and the installation aborted. Then, he had tried to reload it and it
would not reload. The program goes through the installation setup
dialog and, after it tells you it is ready to install and you select
'OK' or whatever, it runs for about 30 seconds and then stops with no
warning messages of any kind.

I went to the Symantic site and downloaded the 11 pages of instructions
on how to manually uninstall the software under Windows 98. After going
through the entire 11 pages including editing the registry, etc., I
again attempted to install the software. The same thing happend...the
installation ran for about 30 seconds and then stopped with no messages
or any indication of why it stopped.

My friend is not especially computer literate and this problem has just
about exhausted my meager knowledge of what to do to help him. I feel
bad because I've left him without an operable piece of software and he
needs the Norton AntiVirus program contained in System Works because he
uses Outlook Express and I doubt very much if OE has been updated so
that attachments to email messages are not opened automatically in the
preview window.

Can someone give me some ideas about what I might be able to do to get
this software installed and the system operating. I know there have
been some message here on the list over the last few weeks about Systems
Works 2002 but, since I didn't at the time plan to ever use the
software, I deleted them. I wish now I had played closer attention.
