First you need to decide which backup philosophy you will use.

Some people believe it best to back up EVERYthing.  If that is what you
choose to do, then you will definitely need a tape drive or an equal sized
second hard drive.

Other people believe that since you have all the applications on disk/CD
all that needs to be protected is the data.  If this is your choice, then
a ZIP or LS-120 will be sufficient to hold a year's worth of "home"
generated data.

If you pick a tape or zip drive, then it will come with software to
perform the backups.  It can even be automated and scheduled to do the
backup at 3 in the morning if you choose.

Hard drives and internal mount LS-120 drives do not have backup software.
I don't know about external versions of the LS-120.
