<<<< The only word processing program on this machine is Microsoft WORD>>>

in my opinion this should do and no need (unless you specifically want one) for downloading

i suggest you right click the "attachment/icon" and save it your disk in a suitable location after giving a file name ( as already suggested by Hugh Vandervoort).

next you double click the file and you will be presented with an option to "open with" (because you do not seem to have a default application). scroll through the list of applications and choose "microsoft word" and click ok.
you should be able to access the contents.

NOTE---ALL THE ABOVE IS ASSUMING YOUR ATTACHMENT IS A TXT FILE (YOUR POST SUGGESTS SO).IF IT IS A GRAPHICS FILE AND SOME OTHER PROGRAM IS ASSOCIATED TO OPEN IT THEN THERE MAY BE PROBLEMS. TO DOUBLE CHECK CLICK ON PROPERTIES (WHEN YOU RIGHT CLICK ON THE ATTACHMENT AND SEE THE FILE PROPERTIES.)

on a side note AFAIK= as far as i know
