Further to my prior comments, for what it's worth I would set up my spreadsheet, using your example of 12 stones 5 pounds as follows:
To maintain the "Stones.Pounds" Category, Column A is titled Stones, and for the fractional Pounds portion - Column B is titled Pounds.
Column C is titled Equivalent Total Pounds or whatever suits you.
Enter into A5 (per your example) the 12 stones value and into B5 the 5 pounds value.
Enter into C5 the following formula:
(A5+(B5/14))x14
C5 will show 173
Not sophisticated, but it works for me.
