I, too, had a report from housecall that included info like I quoted below
from Charlie. Additionally, I had a sizeable number of files that did not
get scanned that said "fail to scan file(-89or 92, skip this file)." I did
not have any viruses reported, however, and for that I am thankful. I also
want to thank Alan Thompson for suggesting the Housecall site.
Quote: Housecall also informed me that I have a large number of compressed
files that are corrupted; specifically ".cab" files in C:\Win98cab. The
majority of these are between Win98_27.cab and Win98_68.cab. I am unclear
as to the significance of this finding and I am wondering if anyone can tell
me how I should respond to this now that I know." End quote.
I have another query regarding my housecall scan results. I noticed that
the single biggest block of files scanned was in:
C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet. This block was about 19,000 of a total of
about 36,000. I am confused about the difference between
C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files and C:\WINDOWS\TEMP. When I look in
Explorer the Windows Temp is 255 objects with 6.28 MB space taken up. The
Windows Temporary Internet Files has no count or space taken indication. It
does have hundreds of items listed, 90% or more being cookies. Can I safely
delete either or both of these so-called temp files? I ran disk cleanup and
it got rid of .05 MB of junk from Temporary Internet Files, IE5 Content. I
would appreciate help resolving my confusion.
Thanks,
Mike Williams
