Chuck,
In the last three weeks I have sent two kids off to their freshman years
(Dickinson College & Drexel University). At each school, the IT/IS
department had a complete set of step by step instructions -- and both were
different.
In both cases, there was a static IP address for the dorm room, but there
was extra software/network-configurations to set up a roaming account so
that the students can access their account from anywhere on the campus
(Media center, library, labs, etc.) My advice is to wait until you get to
school and find out their particular requirements.
