Anna, you are soooo "Preaching to the choir!" :) After all, this is
the sister list of PCBUILD, which is about building and repairing PC's!
(I purchased my first desktop in 1986 and haven't purchased one since.)
Unfortunately, when I had to purchase a laptop a year ago, I got "stuck"
with all the proprietary hardware and extra software junk that comes
with these things. Jagpal doesn't tell us anything about his computer;
not even the operating system. If it is a laptop, he had no choice.
Also, there are many brand-name computers that sell a whole package for
under $1000. It is hard to build a decent computer that cheap, taking
into account the operating system and accessories. Building a computer
is for those who can afford the luxury of the extra cash, the
aggravation when things go wrong (see my other posts on my networking
problems), the time, and the climb up the learning curve. I know that
in the large metro areas there are probably custom built machines at a
more competitive price (perhaps, also, building clubs or classes that
purchase in volume with experienced people teaching), but I don't see
those in the minor metro area where I live. :(

My final solution to this problem was to quit buying computers with
pre-installed software and no individual, reintallable OS, driver, and
application CDs. I built my last PC - my son ordered parts and had his
built. Its SOOOO nice for the hard drive not to be full of crap that
you don't know what it is and can't get off. AnnaSummers
