I was having the same kind of problem.  I opened up processes in Ctrl+At+Del 
and there were about 250 processes running.  I noticed that there were many 
many copies of  'anotify.exe' and each were 200 MB.  I started deleting them 
and noticed that an AOL file was increasing each time I deleted the smaller 
file.  I googled 'anotify.exe' and found out it's an AOL file.  I deleted 
AOL IM entirely and now my computer runs just fine.  I also renamed the AOL 
file that insisted on starting itself and downloading more of itself. 
Forgot to add that I deleted unused programs.  I was at the point I was 
ready to reformat, but decided to look for horses before I looked for zebras 
and it worked.  I suppose I am learning something from reading posts from 
this list.  Thanks, everybody.
