Other ways:  use GHOST to image the drive to a recordable CD, use PKZIP to
span some floppies and you could use a utility like Winternals  ERD
Commander to repair the disk ($$$) and even use a CD of Knoppix Linux (free)
to access the network or internet and transfer the files by cable or USB.

I'm doing it again - replying to my own emails.

Problem solved - I eventually discovered how to remove the laptop's =
drive.  After that it was a simple job to slave it into a desktop system =
and copy the files I needed.
