The older and simpler FAX programs work as follows... (YMMV)

Receiving a FAX is this type of program is "very often" just like receiving
one with a regular FAX machine. Except that a regular FAX machine
will "listen" on the line and only pick up the line when it hears the FAX
tones as they go into another piece of equipment, such as a (voice) answering
machine when "it" picks up.
This could be a problem if your modem and the software will not "discriminate"
what is coming in, and if you only have one line.
(I never leave my computer set to auto receive Faxes for this reason...)

You "generally" need a regular phone line connected to your computer
(with your regular house or business phone number).
With DSL, this line would need to be a FILTERED line...
Note: I use a "whole house" DSL filter at the Disconnect Box outside the house...
Even though ALL regular house phones are filtered at that one point, I STILL
had to filter again at the computer with a little phone filter, (the more common
type...) I think my modem was VERY sensitive to the normally insignificant
and/or "unheard" line noise left by the whole house filter...
