Along with other similar software, it can't always find sufficient points
of reference to enable it to join photos.
That usually occurs if there's insufficient overlap, or insufficient
distinguishing points.
But it can sometimes occur even where such points appear obvious to us.
When I looked into this topic a year or so ago, Autostitch appeared to be
the only software that would stitch in both horizontal and vertical planes
at the same time over multiple photos. I imagine there are probably several
commercial derivatives of Autostitch by now.
