Only if you tell it to. You can, as I do, turn that option off. I'm now
using Avira, but AVG was a lot quicker with its updates.
Avira seems a tad less heavy on resources---though I really don't notice
any difference between the two.
I suspect my ISP has a mirror cache for AVG updates, as they seem almost
instant.
