Hello List:

I have just rebuilt a Celeron 300, PII PC100, 64MB system that a client purchased from a local vendor and was dissatisfied with (sound & video discovered to be onboard and were not direct x compliant, consistent crashes and lockups/client had previously required 2 reformats and replacement of onboard sound with Creative Labs AWE64 by original vendor prior to contacting me for rebuild.) Since he did not care if the cpu was PII or not, I suggested the following:
Asus P5AB Super 7
AMDK62 400mhz
DCS 3D Pro+ Intel 740 AGP (didn't realize I needed to order a video adapter/graphics accelerator . . . had this one on hand in my tiny little shop)

CD ROM, hard drive (Samsung 4.3) sound card, floppy and modem (56K softmodem employing Rockwell chipset) appeared (!?) to be functioning fine and were retained for rebuilt system.

BIOS defaults selected with very minor exceptions.
ASUS Probe and BIOS indicate consistent CPU temp of 127 degrees and Mobo temp of 99 degrees F. Probe set limits of 174 degrees on the processor and 126 degrees on Mobo.

Receiving consistent Window Protection errors and eradic operation in Windows 98 system info (Control Panel, My Computer, Windows Explorer, msconfig all lock up frequently . . . lock up on screen saver exit). Windows lost the *.ink shortcut to Windows Explorer from the Start menu . . . .

Mobo settings checked and rechecked. CPU, core voltage, etc. all recognized and reported appropriately. I suspect the following . . .

Intel chipset AGP designed for PII (????-their website says no reason why it shouldn't work with Super7). Incidentally, I installed the appropriate mobo AGP drivers - board recognizes as Intel 740/PCI using drivers provided by manufacturer (DCS Multimedia World) with card and most recent version downloaded from DCS site.

OR (and this is the less likely, I think)

hard drive problems ???

I am going to try changing out the CPU with another AMD K62400 to see if that could be the culprit. Also, I will try a standard video adapter not AGP. Outside of that, I am fairly stumped. Any suggestions???

Thanks much.
