Thanks for the information, Allan. I learned about new areas in the
registry I did not consider before. Unfortunately, nothing there
explains my computer's behavior. I had already searched the registry for
explorer and even iexplore but found nothing to explain the strange
startup. Will keep looking.

I did find something I don't understand. There is a startup for a
program named INTERNAT.EXE and also a program named LOADWC.EXE - does
anyone know what these program do?
